INTERVIEW BY ALBERTO CHIURATO RANZI - RANZI EDITORE WITH CRISTINA DE PEDROJUAN PASCUAL

Cristina de Pedrojuan interview - curated by Ranzi Editore & ÆMERGENTBlog is a new project of ÆMERGENT Art Platform

CRISTINA DE PEDROJUAN INTERVIEW

1. What’s your type of art? The main genre and typology? And how did you get into it? How did you learn it and refined it?

The primary art form I am currently working on is installation, which combines materials and space to create an environment. All the objects that are created stem from a digital world that is preconceived and defines the configuration of this world. My second year of studies at the Academy of Brera in Milan was a transitional moment from painting to technology, as it occurred during a period of closure, and I felt drawn towards this world that had already captured my attention.

2. When did you realize you were and artist? What’s your education and background? Did you have interesting and related experiences or did you start from scratch and you are a self- taught artist? Describe it.

The role of an artist is not assumed overnight like someone grabbing a morning coffee. Sensitivity to artistic work is an innate ability that must be developed over time. Each new knowledge acquired enriches our visual library. I believe it is the combination of artistic skills that will guide you towards a future in the field of arts. I completed my studies in 2023 at the Academy of Brera after previously studying Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca in Spain. I think the fact that part of my family is involved in the world of art, especially music, has helped me make decisions. Seeing larger figures in the artistic realm pursuing their paths encourages you.

3. Someone said: doctors cure people and engineers build houses, artists don’t. Do you think art is useful? Had it been? Will it be? And where do you consider yourself positioned in this? is there any role of art nowadays?

Art is not born with a purpose; it shouldn't be a manufactured object that accompanies a definition of utility. Art creates sensations, emotions. These arise involuntarily as a response to a question we ask ourselves when contemplating a work of art. We need to ask ourselves if it serves a narrative purpose or if it is a form of social sharing.

4. As an emergent artist, do you think you developped or acheived a style/ Savoir Faire? If so, describe it please. If not, are you trying to find it?

I believe it takes a long time to define oneself in a specific type of art. Experimentation when one is young is crucial for growth. It is also important to be resourceful and take advantage of the spaces provided by the academy. When I was studying Fine Arts in Salamanca, Spain, we had huge workshops that were open outside of class hours for us to work.

5. What’s your environment? It can be family, relationship, school, work, etc. Describe your personal space, studio, room, creative space where you actually think and create.

A year ago, I rented a shared studio (Studio Spine), where most of my works are born. It takes some time to make a space welcoming and inviting for creation. In big cities like Milan, which is not the capital of Italy but behaves as if it were, it is sometimes really difficult to find a place for oneself. Even on the outskirts, where my studio is located, there are free spaces to be alone and create. The small community that has formed allows me to explore and investigate while feeling detached from the chaos and rush of the city.

6 - Do you think young artists needs a support like the platform ÆMERGENT? And how this must be done in order to make you develop your own experience as professional?

Platforms like ÆMERGENT help emerging artists in their early stages when they need visibility and exposure. Speaking and interacting with their peers allows them to understand their generation's perspective. Sharing ideas helps create a community.

7. What are you actually working on? Future projects?

The main project that has occupied my time is the one from the final year, which I am still pursuing after graduation. Continuing with the main theme of play, I thought of developing spaces that would be much more similar to those of everyday life this time. Without neglecting the digital aspect, which is the primary visual component when creating "playgrounds."

8. To end this interview, choose your favorite work and talk about it. Can be the best on to describe you, your sensibility and methodology. The flagship one.

I believe that each artwork I create serves not only an artistic purpose but also describes the moment I am in. Looking back, I realize how finding a shared studio in Milan has greatly enhanced the impact of my works. Perhaps in digital works, I find a greater representation of my current state. The series 'Do Not Accept Candy from Strangers' is the depiction of a space that doesn't exist but resides within my imagination and can be more easily shaped thanks to the digital world.
